2010 Memphis Redbirds Recap

Although the Redbirds’ season ended somewhat bittersweet, I thought it would be a good idea to highlight how much fun we had this year. And what better way to do that than with pictures Allison Rhoades took throughout the season!

So here we go…

The 2009 Champs were back with a few new additions, but the same attitude and drive to win.

For the last time, Jordan. Out.

Thank you

Hey everyone!  Dave here for the final time.  Well as you know, the Rainiers came right in here and swept us in three games to win the Pacific Coast League Championship.  As Mark Hamilton said after the game, they were the hot team this year like the ‘Birds were last year, so congratulations and my hats off to the Tacoma Rainiers organization.

As for me, I want to personally thank everyone for such a great season.  It’s been a true pleasure spending the last eight months of my life here in the Mid-South with all of you.  Thank you for helping a guy from New Jersey make the adjustment of living down here…I have certainly learned a lot.

I encourage you to keep up with the ‘Birds on our Facebook and Twitter accounts all off-season for the very latest updates on the team and AutoZone Park.  I’m headed back north later this week, so make sure to check back here on ChirpChatter for our next season’s round of bloggers!

All the best and once again, thank you for a fantastic season!
Dave

It takes a leap of faith

Hey everyone!  Dave here.  Well, it looks like we’re in a bit of trouble.  The ‘Birds are down 2-0 in the Pacific Coast League Championship Series to Tacoma.

Being that the series is best-of-five, we have to win three straight games starting Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.  I headed over to Germantown this afternoon to pay a visit to Dunkin’ Donuts for “Rally Donuts.”

DD's.jpg

Hopefully the power of these 25 munchkins will help turn the tide of the series.

Another thing that can turn the tide is the return of the…

RALLY PICKLE!!!!!

And anyone who knows me understands how huge of a Bruce Springsteen fan I am.  So this video can also play a significant role in repeating as PCL champions…

Player Spotlight: Lefty Relief Pitcher, Rich Rundles

Rich Rundles was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the the 3rd round of the 1999 amateur draft at the age of 18. He is currently the first and only player from Jefferson County to ever be drafted right out of high school.

After playing in the Red Sox organization for two full seasons, he was traded to the Montreal Expos half way through his third season where stayed from 2001-2005. In 2006, Rundles signed with the St. Louis Cardinals before being traded that same year to the New York Mets. The left-hander signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians February of 2007 staying put until joining the Memphis Redbirds for the 2010 season.

While with the Indians organization, Rundles made his major league debut September 3rd, 2008. He appeared in eight games in the big leagues surrendering one run on five hits while walking three and striking out six in five innings of work that year. The following year he spent most of his time with the triple-A Columbus Clippers but  joined the Cleveland Indians for one game, May 24.

This year the Jefferson City product leads the Redbirds bullpen in game appearances with 56 (tied with Josh Kinney) and is second in innings pitched with 55.2. He ended the regular season with a 7-1 record, allowing 20 runs on 56 hits with 18 walks and 35 strikeouts for a 3.23 ERA.

Nicknames: Richie, Rundy, that’s about it.

Hometown: Jefferson City, TN

Favorite baseball player of all time: Growing up, it was Dale Murphy.

 DaleMurphy_200px.jpgbraves.jpg

What team did you watch growing up?Atlanta Braves

What is your best moment on the diamond? Probably my first time pitching in the big leagues.

If you weren’t in baseball, what would you be doing? Something to do with architecture.

Favorite play in a baseball game: A diving play or a behind-the-back catch by the pitcher.

Most embarrassing moment while playing baseball: Again, my first major league outing. There was a squirrel that ran up on the mound.

squirrel-5.jpg

If you were a kid would you rather be the one in Rookie of the Year, Angels in the Outfield or Little Big League? Rookie of the
Year

What is the most difficult part about playing professional baseball? The every day grind.

What is your favorite thing about being a Redbird? It’s pretty cool to be playing in my home state.

Tell us one thing about you the fans don’t already know: I used to ride mini horses in the rodeo when I was younger.

rodeo.jpg

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A baseball player

Where do you see yourself in 25 years? Somewhere in East Tennessee on a farm in the middle of nowhere.

Favorite food: Fried Okra, simply because every time I go home my Grandma makes it for me.

Newest Hobby: This off-season I made my own board game. That was pretty fun. I made all the pieces, boards, cards and the dice.

I’m afraid of…snakes.

Who is your greatest influence? My dad, for sure.

Who do people say you look like? Shaggy, from Scooby-Doo

Rich Rundles.jpgshaggy.jpeg

Do you have any autographs? I do, probably the most important one I have is from Hank Aaron. Pretty cool.

What do you like best about the city of Memphis? The fan support of the Redbirds

Any broken bone stories? When I was four my cousin and I were always competitive against each other and we were jumping down the stairs. One would jump down and the other would say “well, I can jump on the higher one.” So I went to the top, jumped down and broke my left arm. My Grandmother did not want to tell my dad because it was my left arm so they tried to hide it for a
little bit.

Describe yourself in five words or less: Tall.

Three things you can’t live without: My wife, family and friends.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Hey guys!  Dave here!  If you haven’t heard, the Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Sacramento River Cats to play the Redbirds for the Pacific Coast League Championship.

Rainiersceleb.jpgWhat makes that really sweet (for us at least) is that it means the entire series will be played right here in Memphis!  Why you may ask?  Because Tacoma’s ballpark, Cheney Stadium, is currently undergoing renovations and cannot have games played there.

The best-of-five series begins Tuesday night and tickets are on sale now.  Just go to our home page for more ticket information to watch your ‘Birds defend their Pacific Coast League Championship!

See ya at AutoZone Park!

confchamps.jpg

AND WE’RE HEADED TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!

Hey everyone!  Dave here.  Well, it wasn’t easy but the “Comeback Kids” of the Memphis Redbirds erased a three-run deficit in the seventh then Mark Hamilton hit the game-winning home run in the ninth to send them to the playoffs.
hamiltonstance.jpg
The playoffs start with two games at AutoZone Park on Wednesday against the RedHawks before they head to Oklahoma City to play the final three if necessary.

Visit our homepage on http://www.memphisredbirds.com for more ticket information.

For all of the marbles…

Hey everyone!  Dave here.  In case you haven’t been following, today (Monday) is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge day in Redbirds nation.  They defeated Iowa 8-7 in 15 innings on Sunday thanks to an Allen Craig single to drive in Tyler Greene to win it.  What does this mean you may ask?  It means that the final regular season game will determine who wins the American North Division and make the playoffs…and who goes home.

Iowa has Jay Jackson on the hill while we have our Opening Day starter from way back in April, Evan MacLane, going for the ‘Birds.

maclane-jackson.jpg

Today’s pitching match-up:  Jay Jackson (left) vs. Evan MacLane (right)

I already know my Labor Day plans:  At 1PM Central I will kick back, fire up the grill and tune into WIVG 87.7 FM and listen to Steve Selby call the decisive game that will determine both team’s seasons.  Exciting isn’t it?

I will post playoff ticket information on here if we make it there.  However, you can go to our home page on memphisredbirds.com for all of that info (and I encourage you to do so), but I’m a superstitious baseball guy so I don’t want any sort of playoff jinx on this blog.

Happy Labor Day and go Redbirds!

Congrats Brandon Dickson!

Dickson POTW.jpg

Brandon Dickson was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week. Dickson was given the honor for the week ending August 29th and compiled a 2-0 record, 2.40 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched. Earlier in the year, he was named to the PCL All-Star Team. Dickson is the third Redbird to receive Pitcher of theWeek, joining Fernando Salas (week ending July 11) and P.J. Walters (week ending May 16).

Ruben Gotay was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 31st round of the 2000 amateur draft out of Indian Hills Community College-Centerville. He spent five and a half season in their farm system before being traded to the New York Mets July 19, 2006.

After a month of playing for the New Orleans Zephyrs in 2007, Gotay was called up to the big leagues where he spent the rest of the season predominantly as a second baseman. He played in 98 games with a .295 average (56Hx190AB), 25 runs, 24 RBI, 16 walks and 42 strikeouts.

He was then selected off waivers by the Atlanta Braves March 28, 2008, spending all year in the majors. Making only a three day trip to the triple-A Richmond Braves before being sent back to Atlanta.

Last year, Gotay spent the whole season with the Reno Aces, the Arizona Diamondbacks triple-A affiliate. He hit .272 with 11 home runs with a .429 OBP, compiling more walks (102) than hits (101).

This year he joins the Memphis Redbirds for the first time in his career. Gotay leads the ‘Birds in games (128), walks (88) and strikeouts (107). He has been relied upon as a third baseman while with Memphis, tying Donovan Solano with most errors on the team at 18.

Another Player Spotlight in the books, that’s all for Ruben Gotay!
Jordan. Out.

Player Spotlight: Relief Pitcher, Josh Kinney

Josh Kinney has had a great season as a Memphis Redbird this year. With 10 saves, three wins and four losses on the season, Kinney has been one of our most relied upon relievers appearing in 48 games.

He was the first Cardinals farmhand from the Springfield (MO) Double-A affiliate to reach the Major Leagues. While with St. Louis in 2006, Kinney played in 21 games giving up nine runs on 17 hits with eight walks and 22 strikeouts. His ERA was 3.24 in 25.0 innings pitched. He also made two appearances in the playoffs that year.

After his spectacular season with the Cards, Kinney missed all of 2007 to undergo “Tommy John” surgery on his right elbow then fractured his arm during rehabilitation.

Making a comeback in 2008, he rehabbed with Double-A Springfield in late September and made his way back to the St. Louis roster where he closed out the season. He began 2009 with the Cardinals before being optioned down to the Memphis Redbirds where he spent most of the year. Kinney still appeared in 17 games as a Cardinal, being recalled twice.

Nicknames: My buddies back home call me ‘the Movie Star’

Hometown: Port Allegany, PA

Favorite baseball player of all time: I don’t really have one…I always liked Bob Gibson, I thought what he did was awesome so if I was going to pick one it would probably be him.

RetroBob_Gibson.jpg
st_louis_bob_gibson_st12_large.jpg

What is your best moment on the diamond? Winning the World Series in 2006

What team did you watch growing up? The St. Louis Cardinals

If you weren’t in baseball, what would you be doing? I’d probably be doing something involved in the outdoors. I spend a lot of time hunting and fishing and I like to get into outdoors television of some sort.

Most embarrassing moment while playing baseball: Knock on wood, I haven’t really had any yet but…to be continued.

Favorite play in a baseball game: In 2006, it was game two of the National League Championship Series against the Mets in the eighth inning, tie game. I think I had bases loaded with one out facing (Carlos) Beltran who’s a Cardinal Killer. I got him to hit into a double play to end the inning, we went onto win and I got the win.

kinney2_t180.jpg610x1.jpg

Best prank pulled that you’ve seen or been a part of while in pro ball? I always like the ‘jump out of a locker at somebody.’ You hide in someone’s locker and scare them- we just did it the other day here for the first time to Lance Lynn. The funny part about it is he’s the only person I’ve ever seen not really jump.

What is your favorite off-day activity? My wife and I own a farm back in Springfield, MO and on off-days I usually go home and work on the farm. Just spend time with my wife outside.

What is the most difficult part about playing professional baseball? Being away. No matter where you’re at, in the minor leagues or major leagues, you’re still away from your family.

Where do you see yourself in 25 years? Hopefully I’ve got a whole house full of kids, doing something else I love to do, and my family is healthy and I just hope I have a really big family.

If you were on a reality TV show, which one would it be and why? Oh, that’s a no-brainer. I’d go on the Drury Outdoors: Dream Season.

images222.JPGWildlifeObsession-TerryDrury2.jpg

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A baseball player and maybe a professional hunter.

Favorite food: Steak. Deer steak. Deer, Elk or even Moose. Bear is pretty good too.

Favorite movie: Jeremiah Johnson

Song that gets you pumped up: “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson

Favorite TV Show: Grey’s Anatomy

Newest Hobby: I’m always outside- I don’t feel right sitting inside watching television but during baseball season there’s only so much you can do! So, I started watching TV shows. My roommate (Matt Scherer) keeps me updated on all the drama and we stay up and have ice cream and watching television.

two-amazed-boys-watching-tv.jpgI’m afraid of…Snakes…and spiders aren’t really a friend of mine either.

Tell us one thing about you the fans don’t already know: I can whistle like any bird and I’m as normal as you can get.

Who is your greatest influence? My dad

Do you have any autographs? Not really, I’ve gotten a few but I give them away to family and friends. I like to give that kind of gift away.

What do you like best about the city of Memphis? The food. They have really good food here.

Any broken bone stories? Yea, I broke my elbow pitching. It was after I had Tommy John surgery and I was rehabbing from that. I made a throw and I cracked my funny bone- it sounded like a carrot snapping in half. Now I have an inch screw holding my bone on, they screwed it back onto my arm and…I’m actually lucky to even be playing again.

Describe yourself in five words or less: Boring and simple.

Three things you can’t live without: Air, food and water.
