Coming to a Town Near You!

Hey everyone!  Dave here.  Starting yesterday and continuing for awhile all of the interns are running around the Greater Memphis Area distributing pocket schedules to as many businesses as we possibly can.

Marketing Intern Matt (right) has done a great job thus far of mapping everything out.

One of many stacks of pocket schedules to go out

All 14 of us are in teams of two with a given territory to distribute these pocket schedules.  Yesterday we ht up the downtown area surrounding AutoZone Park, and mostly everyone has been very accommodating.  We feel it’s a win-win for all parties involved.  The Redbirds win because we get added exposure and can get our schedules out to people and the business wins because customers like to know they support other local businesses.

Promotions Intern Kevin is ready to hit the town in his full catcher’s gear!

My partner in crime is Assistant Grounds crew Ian as yesterday we went down Third and Beale Streets unloading endless amounts of schedules.  It was a little cold, but at least the sun was out so that made walking around a little more pleasant.

Today we head into the suburbs on what looks to be another sunny day.  So if you’re a business owner in the area, it is only a matter of time until a pair of interns walk into your store.  So in advance we thank you for your support!  If you’re a customer and see the little cardboard box, feel free to take one those pocket schedules, and we look forward to seeing you at AutoZone Park!

Congrats Redbirds!

What’s up everyone?  Dave here.  A couple of things to update you on:

First off, this past weekend in Nashville the Redbirds were honored as one of two Professional Teams of the Year for the state of Tennessee by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame!  Redbirds broadcaster Steve Selby was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the organization.  The other team was the Knoxville Ice Bears.

Obviously, winning the Pacific Coast League Championship was a big reason for the award, but a lot of credit has to be given to the employees who helped and will continue to make this a world-class organization.  However, we are not satisfied.  Look for this year to be even better than the last!

Secondly, April 18th here at AutoZone Park is Tipton County Community Day.  We will honor businesses and fans located within the County.  If you and your team or group want be part of the festivities call Group Sales at 901-722-0229 or e-mail groupsales@memphisredbirds.com.

I promise more pictures will come (I got a new camera and I’m itching to use it) in the following blogs so keep on checking Chirp Chatter!

Naming Competition

Hey guys and gals!  Dave here.  As you may or may not know, the Redbirds are currently having a naming competition for our 2010 Gameday Program!

Using twitter and Facebook fans can submit their entries to name the program. For fans using twitter simply send a @ tweet or direct message to the Redbirds at twitter.com/memphisredbirds. For Facebook users, fans can write their suggestions on Nostalgia Man’s wall (facebook.com/nostalgia.man). The new publication will replace the Redbirds yearbook and be produced four separate times with fresh content throughout the season.

The lucky winner will receive two 10-game You Pick ‘Em plans, a framed copy of the first program and pre-game recognition on the field on Opening Night. The contest will run through February 26 when all entries will be trimmed down to a list of five for fans to vote on at memphisredbirds.com.

So send in those names!

Jersey Boy

round1.jpg Name:  David Portney

Hometown: Ridgewood, NJ

College and major/degree(s): Ithaca College with a B.S. in Sport Media

Hobbies: Playing pick-up games of any sport.  I also spend a lot of time following baseball.

Likes: Boston Red Sox (I know I’m from New Jersey, but my parents are from Boston so they made sure from a young age I became a Sox fan), Bruce Springsteen, Seinfeld, going to baseball games/watching them on TV, mild winters, cool summers and laying on the beach.

Dislikes: the Yankees, brutal upstate NY winters and stubborn personalities.

Favorite Baseball Team:  Boston Red Sox

Favorite Baseball Player of all-time: Nomar Garciaparra

Favorite play in a baseball game: Nothing like an around the horn 5-4-3 double play or a well-turned 3-6-1 double play.

Favorite Sports Movie of all-time: Rudy.  Cliche I know, but oh well it’s my favorite.  The Sandlot is my favorite baseball movie.

Favorite Sports Quote: “The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.” ~James Earl Jones’ character from Field of Dreams

Best sports moment as a fan or a player:  I’m cheating and putting two

1:  The Red Sox winning the World Series in 2004 then going to school the next day in the heart of Yankee land and proudly wearing my Sox hat and shirt

2:  After baseball suspended play for a week because of the events of 9/11, the Mets continued play against their rival Atlanta Braves.  Mike Piazza hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the 8th, and whenever I watch that home run it still gives me goose bumps.  With that one swing for the bat, even if it was just for a moment, the people of NY were able to celebrate.

Here’s the link (the home run is about 1:40 in):

Who Dat?

Hey everyone!  Dave here.  It’s been a few days so I just wanted to check in.  How ’bout them Saints?  It was certainly a very exciting game, and even if you were leaning for the Colts you have to at least be a little happy for the Saints and the city of New Orleans.

We interns had our own Super Bowl party with all of the fixins.  Definitely have to give props to Jordan, Erin, Britni and Caleb for making some delicious Super Bowl delights like enchiladas, sloppy joes, stuffed peppers, guacamole, chili cheese fries, muffins and cupcakes.  I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you.

Make sure you check back later today for our next intern highlight!
