Player Spotlight: Second Baseman, Daniel Descalso
Good news is, it’s been almost a month and Descalso was reactivated from the DL July 27th going 3-for-9 with one run scored since being back and has extended his hit streak to five games, including three games from before his DL stint. Looks like he’s back and better than ever!

Best prank pulled that you’ve seen or been a part of while in pro ball: In 2008, a teammate and I took another guy’s keys to his car, filled his AC vents
with baby powder and turned his air conditioning on high so when he got in and turned on his car after the game he got sprayed with baby powder all in the
face.
Who is your greatest influence? My dad, growing up he was always around coaching me in baseball and always being a good role model for me.
What is your favorite off-day activity? Nice BBQ, hang out by the pool, etc.
Describe yourself in five words or less: Hard-working, all around good guy.
Do you have any autographs? I have a Derek Jeter one and my favorite one is my Joe DiMaggio autograph picture
What is the most difficult part about playing professional baseball? The grind, the long season, the 140 games and the travel, it all adds up.
What do you like best about the city of Memphis? The history
Any broken bone stories? I have a broken collar bone right now…it was a play over second base, me and Tyler Greene were both going after it. I dove and he slid, his knee hit me in the shoulder and I broke my collar bone.
If you were a kid would you rather be the one in Rookie of the Year, Angels in the Outfield or Little Big League? Rookie of the Year Rookie of the Year because he’s the only one that actually plays.

Player Spotlight: Left Fielder/First Baseman, Allen Craig
After Allen Craig’s outstanding outing as a St. Louis Cardinal yesterday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, I thought it was the perfect time to post his Q & A. But before we get into that, let’s recapitulate last night’s game and Craig’s amazing performance! The Cardinals were down 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth with both Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus sitting out for the day. Craig hit a two-run double to left field plating Brendan Ryan as well as fellow Memphis Redbird Jon Jay. Shortly after, Randy Winn singled to right field to drive in Craig putting St. Louis down by only one run.
Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth. Allen Craig is up again with Yadier Molina on second, Jon Jay on first and two outs. Craig singles to center field, Molina scores to tie up the game! Matt Holliday up next hits a single to right for the winning run. Cardinals win 5-4!! And all on the former Cal Bear’s birthday!
Not only did Craig receive his first Major League double, but he also had his first multi-hit game with the Cards while collecting three RBI. Allen Craig did an exceptional job and St. Louis posted videos to prove it. Check them out!

Baseball Is Here!
What a thrill it was to see the St. Louis Cardinals take the field this weekend at AutoZone Park. Albert Pujols and the gang were visitors to the Memphis Redbirds for a two-game series that took place on Friday and Saturday. The following photos are from Saturday, which turned out to be a perfect day for baseball.
Reigning National League MVP Albert Pujols had a killer day on Friday, going 3-for-5 and netting six RBI. He also hit a home run in Friday’s game and belted one over the Bluff in left field during batting practice on Saturday.
Managers Tony La Russa and Chris Maloney talk before the game. Maloney had the honor of taking the last at-bat on Saturday, producing a ground out off of Jason Motte.

Technology! We did it!
Hello and welcome to what will be many new entries into the world of two dudes interning with the Redbirds. Hopefully this will be an enjoyable experience for those who are fans of the Redbirds, the sport of baseball and the even bigger game…of life. And more importantly, we hope this won’t be a complete waste of time. We’ll be making new posts as much as possible to keep you informed about the comings-and-goings of the Redbirds family. We absolutely encourage and welcome as much feedback as possible. Our goal is to make this area as much about you guys as it is about letting everyone know what’s happening with the Redbirds this season. So, make sure and tell us what you like, what needs improvement and what you think is just absolutely horrible. We can take it.
Let’s get started with some background information to show you that we aren’t just a couple of 17-year-old punks who don’t know the first thing about life, we both have college degrees! Introducing: Ben and Alex…
Ben’s take on Alex:
In his apparent quest for the perfect indie-chic outfit, Alex made his way to Memphis by way of Knoxville, TN, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Tennessee. Outside of baseball, Alex is an authority on all things Nashville Predators and is a firm believer in the glory that is novelty pin collecting. Where as most males might be bashful of their shortcomings, Alex is frighteningly open about his paralyzing fear of flying insects and knows when to bring in reinforcements when bug killing dirty work needs to be enacted. He has a well-developed background in the underground music scene, always keeping his ear to the ground to catch what new sounds are making their way to the listening public. He’s pretty good at it, too. Some call him skinny, but most of us call him friend. Thanks for all you do.
Alex’s take on Ben:
If there’s one thing that is glaringly obvious when you walk into the Redbirds Media Department, it’s the fact that there is a Texan in the room. Thankfully the office has a dress code policy, leaving his boots and spurs hanging in the closet at home. Granted I’ve only known the 24-year-old spittoonin’ cowboy for a little over a month, but not a day goes by without a ‘guns up’ cheer and hand gesture (the equivalent of a pleasant ‘how are you’ in Lubbock, the proud city of Texas Tech and Ben’s college of choice). Ben is using this internship to fulfill his final 6 credits to earn his Master’s in Mass Communication. Overkill I think. So while the Texan pride may not yet be evident in his writing, before long you could start seeing posts about the Astros, Rockets and dirt.
We’ll start getting into a little baseball and begin gearing up for the season in future posts. Along the way we might throw in some music, movies and other miscellaneous interests, but first and foremost we are a baseball blog meant to let you know what’s happening with your Memphis Redbirds. Stay tuned.
